Your incoming reply needs to have some kind of an id to allow you to
retrieve the workitem from the datastore.
Given an id, it is easy to retrieve the workitem from the db and transform
it back into an OpenWFE workitem.
Another option (if this is not possible) could be to have your participant
to cache it until you reply to it.
Does this make sense?
