I think it should happen in a month or two. Many dependencies are dropping support for python 2.7 and hence we are forced to do so as well.
If you make a backup and upgrade now, then you can create a new VM with a more recent OS (eg: ubuntu 18) and migrate the database. This way you won't be affected when we drop support for python 2.7.
