the mayor problem seems to be, that kernel-xyz.ipk does not contain /lib/modules/xyz ! manually writing to kernel/bootloader space is from my experience neither on x86 (where i have a ext2 boot partition /dev/hda1), nor on atheros-soc (where i have /dev/mtd1 ... "kernel") a problem. and i did successful kernel upgrades like that (with having had a spare device with a fresh install to copy /lib/modules/xyz from) --Jan
