Replying to self to add a couple of things:
1) my first submission to openwrt, however trivial, so please use blanks
when shooting ;-)
2) in forum thread http://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=85864
there's an attempt to get a couple of RNDIS modems to work with an Asus
WL-500gP v1. Both me and the other fellow user are obviously stumbling
somewhere.
Can any of the developers help us, perhaps by pointing us in the right
direction?
