At least the brcm-2.4 images use even at least one proprietary binary. No difference to any other Linux (or BSD or ...) distribution.
Nevertheless I added a paragraph to [1] which might clear this up a bit. BTW, there is one gray area in OpenWrt: Any patches in the source tree should be delivered under the license the patched application is under. Maybe this needs some clarification somehow.
