I've had similar "problems" and the reason to choose lan instead of wan was that wan was firewalled by default. Naming the _single_ ethernet port as "lan" avoided this, and seemed simpler than calling it wan and making sure the firewall rules were also changed/disabled. It would be nice if it was easier to use the board defaults infrastructure for devices like this with only a single ethernet port, that are often used as client devices, often with a wifi AP, rather than the traditional ethernet AP, wifi disabled.
