build, how should I setup my config to let PPPoE do it's job? (Plugging
the cable into WAN won't work since swconfig won't pick it up, and
plugging it into other ports can't complete the PPPoE discovery.)

With firmwares built from OpenWrt, WAN port is kind of working on its own
without being part of the built-in switch so it is expected that swconfig
won't pick it up. Are you still using `option ifname eth0.2` in `config
interface wan` with the vlan config being the default? If that is the
case, then `option ifname eth1` should work for you.

With OpenWrt firmware for HC6361, `eth1` is the interface name for WAN
port and `eth0` for the built-in switch (the 2 LAN ports on the case).
