Comment (by IRC Guru):

Freenode works with tor. You should use their "hidden service" and you
have to register... Okay, registration itself have to be without tor (but
you can use proxy, vpn or web if you care about your privacy so much).

Then it will be better for you if your client supports SASL auth. While it
is quite brand new and not all IRC clients support it, SASL could use
"passwordless" auth through D-H and is a really good idea, btw. Downside
is that "services" (NickServ and somesuch) *must* be alive to do it.

And btw, its very nice of Freenode to set up hidden service on their
servers. TBH I do not know other nets who bothered to do the same. They
both managed to keep abuse levels adequate while providing some privacy:
network haves no idea of your IP and will set up cloak using your
registered nickname instead, so nobody knows your IP. Furthermore, SASL
makes sure your IP can't leak at all: auth and cloaking are done before
everyting else happens. I think we should thank Freenode staff for
bothering self to deal with Tor hidden services setup.
