You say is to protect "prevent accidentally overwriting..."
Replacing the boot loader with something that do not need the soldering on
the tiny, tiny, puny board and damaged it physically...
"Prevent" a disaster! That is exactly what that would achieve. You could
have thought of a software switch for instance.
Asking us to build a new image increase drastically the risk you are
trying to avoid in a first place.
Now, that being said: Can I change just one module "mtd" instead? That
would reduce the risk.
