Just recompiled with fstools present and yes, that does make the
difference.
Did not know that fstools is required to get a working squashfs/jffs2
combination. Good idea to not make it optional as the 'tools' in the name
suggests something optional. Just tried to make the image not bigger than
needed.

having resolved it!
