Happened today to me with TP-Link 841nd v5 and openwrt 15.05 (official
release).
I stopped wan from interfaces (pppoe connection) and I got exactly the
same message. From this moment it failed to connect using pppoe, had to
unplug and replug the router to make it connect again to pppoe (reboot
from openwrt interface didn't really fixed it, it rebooted the router but
it was still failling to connect (unable to rename ppp1 to pppoe-wan)).
