I'm going to guess that you run out of RAM and/or simply that you overload
the CPU. Have you tried adding a small swap partition (128-256Mb) on your
USB-HDD? I'd also recommend that you to leave a SSH connection open
running top, that way you'll see overall status when it hangs/freezes.
