Although it is regrettable you weren't able to get it going and there's been much work done on X packages, the core functionality and focus of OpenWRT remains headless, VGA-less ultra-low-performance systems. As such, I don't find it terribly surprising that it didn't work. Check back again after the 8.X release, maybe the dev working on the X stuff will have ironed out any issues.
