I've had good experiences with Asus WL-500g Deluxe/Premium, it has two
USB ports.  It costs roughly the same as the WRT54GL.

The WL-500g is rather old though, so maybe there are more modern devices
around these days... although you'd have to be more careful about
openwrt compatibility then.
