You need to check the wiki.  Be sure the device is supported.
I don't see the WRT54G v7 on the supported devices list.
That probably means you're out of luck.  The good news
is that supported devices are cheap on ebay.

Other hints:  If it's anything like the wrt54gs then
the physical reset button will tell the nvram to
tftp an image.  So if things go really bad you'll
want to have the original firmware setup on a tftp server
so you can unbrick the device.  The wiki should have
answers.

Also, get help on the irc channel for quick answers.
Available help depends on the time of day, I find.

Frankly, if you're doing it the first time everything
will take longer than you think.  I usually allow 4 times
as long as I think it's going to take.  You really do want
to be able to take your time and get it rig
