If you build your own image, you can save a fair bit of space by only
keeping what you need (e.g. I never use the web-interface for
administration).

dropbear (installed by default) is usually sufficient and requires less
space (the only thing I add is usually openssh-sftp-server, which lets
dropbear provide the usual sftp access as well).  Not knowing why you
need openssh-server instead, I don't know how to help you.
