I'm sure this tidbit will be interesting to the same people as my original message (i.e., none) but I have noticed the same behaviour in an atheros-atheros setup (Fonera2100 and a TP-Link WR-1043ND). Adding this information in case it proves useful to somebody searching the archives in the future.
