About the images - the "factory" or "tftp" image is usually for
flashing via the factory web interface or via the bootloader, while the
"sysupgrade" is for flashing with "mtd" (which OpenWrt and DD-WRT) use.
So using the "sysupgrade" image here was the correct choice. 

For your
wifi issue, you should try the newest Backfire release (rc4), as the
WZR-HP-G300NH is relatively new:
