I'm wondering whether I should reflash with TP-LINK firmware, or try to
get it working with openwrt.

Does openwrt support the Sierra U320 ??

Which version of openwrt would be recommended for this device ??

Should I just flash a binary filesystem from somewhere, or do I need to
use opkg to get drivers, etc ??

if you do not care of warranty probably the safest first step would be to open the case, check the board,
and see if you can identify the serial pins (if there are any).

considering the flashing version, i got last weeks a Sweex LW160 that had "atheros" written on the box, opened it and found out that actually has a newer tp-link 741n board, perhaps you can identify a similar layout on your equipment and (with serial support) cand afford to test different images.
