Likewise, I just reflashed a WRT54G v3 from Backfire v10.03.1 (with
brcm-2.4 driver) to Backfire trunk r33081 (with brcm47xx driver), and I saw
the WLAN throughput multiply by 6x.  48hrs so far and no stability issues.
Since I compiled the trunk myself, I also added this patch to address
intermittent WLAN disconnection problems that testers have reported.

Besides that, Backfire v10.03.1 with the old proprietary driver run just
fine, albeit with sub-optimal wireless throughput.
