I think you are talking about really old softmac or Orinoco/Prism2 based stuff. If memory serves these wifi B dongles could be reset somehow and you could get a lot of info out of them. I might have the names wrong but they were OLD B only hardware, just poke around the kernel for old wifi drivers and google a bit. Something should pop up.
