I have two OpenWRT boxes:

1) "Main" has a WAN connection to internet. WiFi "private" is bridged to LAN, configured as "Access Point (WDS)" 2) "Second" has LAN connection to some hosts. WiFi "private" is bridged to LAN, configured as "Client (WDS)".

All LAN hosts are on the same subnet, and everybody is happy.

I would like "Second" to extend the "private" WiFi network. This is what I did, as per http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/recipes/atheroswds "Old Stuff" (at the end):

a) Add "Access Point (WDS)" with same ESSID "private", same encryption, bridge to "LAN".

This seems to work. If I blacklist a device on "Main" Wifi, it uses "Second". If I turn "Main" TxPower down to minimum, the device(s) choose "Second".

Should I enable STP mode? At this point, there is no possibility of loops ("Main" is not a client), but if I were to add a second network, "Third" would see two "private" BSSIDs. But, I suppose the "Client (WDS)" can also specify a BSSID to insure that there are no loops.

Are there any alternate (/better) configurations that would let two devices create an extended network?

Is 802.11s applicable? It looks like it does not support/allow encryption.
