now, i don't want to sound like a pester but:

 http://downloads.openwrt.org/backfire/ [1]

backfire was release onĀ 21-Aug-2010, while the first stable release
was releasedĀ 21-Dec-2011 - 16 months later - hardly a person can wait
16 monts for a kernel/ssh/web/$puthereyourservice if there's a
vulnerability.

You have that backwards, maybe it didn't get updated for so long because there were no security issues,

Sounds to me like your may be happier with Debian on your ALIX, have you tried: http://linux.voyage.hk/ ?

I understand your concerns - without going into detail - I don't think they are a problem for OpenWRT.

Regards

Jon
