Under ifconfig it says :
metric N
This parameter sets the interface metric. It is not available under GNU/Linux.

under ip :

metric NUMBER
preference NUMBER
the preference value of the route. NUMBER is an arbitrary 32bit number.


I still don't understand how it gets used and if we don't set it what will 
happen?
