Thanks for the various replies. Now that the wiki is back I also took a look at http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/bwmon?s[]=bandwidth. The "bmon" doesn't seem to give me enough details (it only splits "per interface" so I can't distinguish the traffic generated by different machines). OTOH, I'm currrently trying out darkstat, fprobe+ntop, and bandwidthd. I must say the fprobe approach is attractive since I do have a more powerful server right next to my old OpenWRT router, so it works very nicely. OTOH ntop seems to forget data a bit too quickly for my taste so far, IOW it seems to focus on a finer time granularity. pmacct sounds very promising (especially together with fprobe), but it seems more targetted towards actual accounting than towards analyzing usage, tho I expect sure there's some pmacct frontend for my use somewhere. I added fprobe and pmacct links to http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/bwmon?s[]=bandwidth.
