not too proud to ask some really simple/stupid questions, so here goes. was told yesterday that i might want to familiarize myself with any representative AR9331-based 3G/4G wireless router, so did a quick search and settled on the TP-LINK TL-MR3220 (v2), precisely this one:
http://www.tplink.ca/en/products/details/?categoryid=218&model=TL-MR3220 ran out and picked it up cheap at my local techie store, back label confirms it's a v2.3 model. as a test, downloaded newest firmware for v2.x models from tplink.ca, reflashed, that worked so that's a good start. now, the questions. there is no mention of the v2.3 model in the openwrt wiki, but i'm assuming there's no significant difference from the v2.2 model -- it's all lumped under just "v2", yes? from this openwrt wiki page: http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-ap121 the processor for this router is listed as AR9331, which is precisely what i wanted. but if i go to the tp-link section of the supported hardware page: http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/start#tp-link the platform for all of the 3220 and 3420 models is listed as "AR7241". can someone clarify that? do i just not understand the platform model numbering? why does that not say "AR9331"? (actually, "AR9341" for the 3420.) next, over at the downloads directory for this router: https://downloads.openwrt.org/barrier_breaker/14.07/ar71xx/generic/ i can see four images related to both the v1 and v2 versions of this router: openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-mr3220-v1-squashfs-factory.bin openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-mr3220-v1-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-mr3220-v2-squashfs-factory.bin openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-mr3220-v2-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin unsurprisingly, i installed the final entry of the above, and it rebooted just fine, but here's a puzzler. i downloaded the config file from that directory to start my own config and build for this router and there is no distinction between v1 and v2 of this router when doing "make menuconfig" -- there's simply "TP-LINK TL-MR3220". so why are there different flash images for v1 and v2? am i missing something in the menuconfig that distinguishes between the two versions? (the respective v1 and v2 versions of the firmware files have exactly the same size, so possibly they're the same?) once i understand all of the above, i'll config, build and reflash, then i'll probably have more questions. rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P.
