there is no such file, but there is no "Binary" file in *any* of the
feeds/ subdirectories:

but while all the other .index symlinks point to existing
.packageinfo files, the oldpackages.index symlink is broken as there
is no such file oldpackages.tmp/.packageinfo. for some weird reason,
all of the other feeds can be accessed and updated, but the
oldpackages feed is the only one that fails, and it fails
*consistently*.

i use the feeds.conf.default file *exactly* as it's checked out, all
i do is uncomment the oldpackages line.

i believe you ... i've seen this work just fine on other systems
but, as i mentioned, one of my colleagues had exactly the same thing
happen to him on one of his systems, so he's as puzzled as i am. this
used to work just fine. i'll read the rest of your note to try to
track this down.
