Hi,

stupid me: I simply cannot connect to a PPPoA provider because the TP-Link
TD-8616 does not support PPPoA (actually PPPoE to PPPoA conversion)

i.e. see this forum thread:
http://forum.tp-link.com/showthread.php?1638-TD-8616-and-PPPoA
(To be sure I have send a question to TP-Link technical support, and to my
surprise the answer is: no support for PPPoA.)

OK now I'm starting to understand how it works (or doesn't work for me): I
cannot connect to a PPPoA provider via an **external modem** unless the
modem is capable of "PPPoE to PPPoA" protocol conversion:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point-to-point_protocol_over_Ethernet#PPPoE_to_PPPoA

in other words - if I get it - OpenWRT can connect over PPPoA only if the
router is equipped with and ADSL+ port (I never tested one)

> See (for example) http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/business/vigor-120

I'm not able to find another modem out there capable of "PPPoE to PPPoA"
protocol conversion:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point-to-point_protocol_over_Ethernet#Quirks
(last sentence)

this is exactly what I'm trying to avoid

I'm victim of a black hole connection when scp(ing) to one of my hosts
(hosted by one of my providers) and I'm almost sure it depends on some
poorly configured firewall blocking ICMP messages needed for PMTUD:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Path_MTU_Discovery#Problems_with_PMTUD

connecting *directly* with OWRT router (not natted trough external router
connected via PPPoA) I'm hoping OWRT to better control MSS clamping in order
to avoid that black hole

I think that the problem you are describing will "magically" disappear since
the linux networking stack *should* manage MTU discovery problems pretty
well

**please** test PPPoE to PPPoA conversion and let us know how it is working
:-)

I still haven't found what I'm looking for

it's a router (also discontinuad)

it's a router (also discontinued)

http://smartrg.com/adsl2/ are all *routers*
(e.g. The SR10 combines a full-rate ADSL2+ modem as well as a router,
firewall, and TR-069 management. )

I would like to avoid dual natting my internet connections and only use the
OWRT network stack for my internet connections

best regards
Giovanni
