Hi, As a new member of the development team, I must admit that getting started with OpenXPKI was a very difficult task. The subjects of cryptography and PKI can be complex enough for a non-math major. Add the frustration of OpenXPKI just not working "out of the box" and one starts to ponder whether a change of occupation would be an easier path. While I consider myself an experienced programmer, I probably would have given up on OpenXPKI if it hadn't been for Martin at my side for my numerous questions and problems getting things running.
I feel that for the project to be successful, it must, of course, be secure, but in addition it should also be easy to install, easy to use, easy to understand and also be well documented. Only a developer should have to look at the code. Everything else should just work. As Martin mentioned, on the wiki (http://wiki.openxpki.org/index.php/Developer_Guidelines) there is a basic framework for "Developer Guidelines". It is just a start--a foundation for a discussion among those of us that are interested in OpenXPKI moving forward. In the "Guiding Statements", I have written down a couple of simple values as the general direction that I would like the project to go. These are the ideas that I will keep in mind when working on the Developer Guidelines and the rest of the project. They are intended to be vague because they apply to many areas of the project and the specifics should be written in the sections that follow. Please take a moment to briefly review the sections of the Developer Guidelines, adding any major points that you feel are missing and should be addressed. Then, if interest and time permits, pick out a section and fill it with life, keeping the guiding statements in mind. We as a group can then provide constructive criticism by discussing the points on the mailing list. Regards, Scott -- Scott T.
