I didnt check that but in the commit log Martin wrote:

    To do so, do the following in the same directory that contains the
    .VERSION_DEFINITION file:

    vergen --show-revisioninfo >.vergen_revision_state

    If this file is present (and git is not found) subsequent calls to
    vergen will use the cached information instead.
------

We did not create that file in the regular commits, so I assume you need
to do that by yourself on a git-enabled checkout and create a package
including that file by yourself.

If it helps, we might discuss to change the publication process to get
that file included in the official release tags.
