You are perfectly right, you can use a shell script together with the
Authentication::External Handler which is tested and used in a
productive environment at a customer of mine.

The future plan is to have a Connector for this but we just did not
write it - if you have at least medium perl skills, you should be able
to create such a Connector merging the exisiting
Connector::Builtin::Authentication::Password Connector with
Connector::Proxy::Net::LDAP::Simple

The Connector is maintained by the OpenXPKI team, so you can ask
questions on that here, too as we dont have a dedicate mailinglist for
that (for development better use openxpki-devel).
