Having recently built the stack from ground up on MacOS X (using a non-GNU toolchain), I can certainly relate to the pain you are describing.

However, even if you want to build the OPM modules from source, you can still use prebuilt packages for all the prerequisites. Indeed I think that this in fact is the greatest value of the package collection. I mostly use only prebuilt packages, except for ERT.

I understand the desire of doing a complete setup to be sure nothing is left out, but there should perhaps be a more stern warning on the webpage that you are then certainly steering for the scenic route.
