Hello everybody,

It seems we never really landed the Boost version discussion, but we need to
settle this now. The need arises in the filesystem part of Boost, where version
2 and 3 are incompatible. Version 3 was introduced in Boost 1.44, but version 2
remained supported up to (and including) 1.49. For our Red Hat installation we
are already at Boost version 1.45, so at last we are not the ones holding back
:-) Moreover, version 1.49 seems to be shipping by all major distributions
these days (in addition to the newer versions of Boost).

In any case, I suggest the following:

-We open up for use of Boost filesystem version 3 now, which in effect means
that we require at least Boost 1.44 across all OPM repositories depending on
Boost. Hopefully that will have no practical implications, except maybe Bård
needs to update to Ubuntu 12.04 (which has both 1.46 and 1.48 packaged) or use
a ppa, or compile boost out-of-tree like we do. It will however mean that
everybody needs a boost version supporting both version 2 and 3 of filesystem
to have all of opm working.

-We aim for porting over all our file IO code to version 3 in the next release
of OPM, implying that we can move over to a newer version of Boost, e.g., 1.54,
at our convenience. An easy way to achieve this is simply using the new
opm-parser for the upscaling codes in the next release.

Hopefully, this will provide a smooth transition for everybody. Objections and
comments are welcome.

Cheers,
Alf
