Hi Markus! Your observation is correct. The normals in the UnstructuredGrid are required to have length equal to the area of the corresponding face (see the Doxygen doc for UnstructuredGrid).
The reason for this is compatibility with MRST, which has the same convention. In particular some of the parts that make up opm-core were originally written to be used from MRST, and therefore had to have the same behaviour.
