Perhaps the efforts put into ERT (http://github.com/Ensembles/ert) could be a good basis for this kind of work. We have recently implemented a lot of plotting support in a GUI for ERT, see http://ert.nr.no/wiki/index.php/ERT_User_Manual#Plotting for some screenshots (the tutorial / manual is very much WIP at this point), and I guess that carving out some plotting based on this should be possible.
