One question: Are you moving the HEAD version of the files, or the entire history?

I have one more question: we currently use the OPM_CMAKE_ROOT variable
to give the location of the opm build
system. Should we change this to OPM_COMMON_ROOT?

In my opinion: no. The variable is intended to tell where the build scripts are located, and the reason for changing it is only if you want to experiment by using the build scripts from another repository. It isn't (wasn't?) used to locate any C++ code.
