i have been teaching, on a contract basis, for kent parks and rec, and
previously at ravenna parks and rec, so i have some experience with the
issues you are curious about. i know that both stow and tallmadge operate
with some similarity to kent and ravenna.
>Who do you target?
both departments target the whole range of ages, beginning with a 4-8 year
old introductory program, through adults. a one-week summer camp and/or a
tennis tournament have also been traditions. open singles and doubles
leagues have been administered for many years
>Who teaches or runs the program?
in our area, uspta certified pros, such as myself, have been the primary
instructors, although not always or exclusively. uspta pros are preferred,
because of their extensive training.
>Do you use a certified teaching professional?
see above
>When do you run your program and for how long?
most of the programming takes place during the summer, usually in two
sessions of 3-4 weeks each, in the mornings and the evenings.
>How much do you charge and what do the participants receive?
my professional rate is $20/hour. the departments adjust the overall fees
according to their additional needs, and a minimum enrollment is usually
required to run the program. participants supply their own racquets; balls
are supplied and kept by the departments.
>Any other information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
good relations with the school systems (phys ed programs, tennis club
advisors or team coaches) really helps. the shared use of facilities
becomes less of an issue because everyone benefits eventually.
hope this helps,

Last year, we implemented tennis lessons superceding a tennis day camp. These lessons are held in the summer at an outdoor tennis court. The tennis lessons were for three weeks, one and a half hours a day; the tennis camp was for one week for two hours per day. We target kids ages 7 to 14. Our instructors were Green High School Tennis Coaches who are also certified.
Tennis lessons were $48.00/week of which we paid $8.00/hour to each coach; Tennis camp was $45.00/week, again of which we paid $8.00/hour to each coach. This program was implemented as a feeder program for the younger kids, so that once they get to the high school level, they will have the basics and know the GHS form, rules, and policies as well as be somewhat familiar with the coaches and know what is expected of them.
