Summary:*
Under limited supervision, administers all aspects of an advanced,
distributed computer system supporting an important functional area of
Synacor operations.
*Duties and Responsibilities:*
- Plans and coordinates system utilization, and performs growth analysis
and capacity planning.
- Performs system and application analysis/design and programming to
produce a variety of innovative solutions to complex problems.
- Charged with installing, supporting, and maintaining servers and other
computer systems.
- Assists with planning for and responding to service outages and other
problems.
- Able to take on a leadership role in project management for
systems-related projects.
- Must be able quickly and correctly diagnose problems with computer
systems and introduce the best way to fix the problem.
- Proficient in scripting or light programming
- Evaluates and/or recommends purchases; has strong influence on
purchasing process.
- May supervise or train other System Administrators
- Able to support a 24x7 staffing model which includes weekends and
Holidays.
- Other duties as assigned.
*Education, Experience and Skills: *
· Bachelor of Computer Science preferred, minimum two years of
college or equivalent post-high school education or experience
· 5+ years System Administration experience
· Experience with a large mail system utilizing software such as
qmail, postfix, sendmail or cyrus. Zimbra experience a plus.
· RHCE, LPI, CCNA, MySQL and other related certifications a plus
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of writing
purchase justifications, training users in complex topics, making
presentations to an internal audience, and interacting positively with upper
management.
· Independent problem-solving, self-direction.
· Comfortable with most aspects of operating system administration;
for example, configuration of mail systems, system installation and
configuration, fundamentals of security, installing third-party software.
· Familiarity with fundamental networking/distributed computing
environment concepts; can configure NFS, key-based ssh; can use nslookup or
dig to check information in DNS; understands basic routing concepts.
· Has a solid understanding of a UNIX-based operating system;
understands paging and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and
what device drivers do, filesystem concepts (inode, clustering, logical
partitions).
· Generally knows several programming languages used for scripting
or automation of routine tasks. (bash, Perl, PHP).
· Specific experience with Solaris, Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, Perl,
RT, and postfix a plus.
