I tried this in SQL*Plus against Oracle 8.1.6, both in a
straight Select statement and then within an anonymous
PL/SQL block using a ref cursor like the example on your
site.  In both cases I got ORA-03113.

How can I take advantage of this nifty undocumented feature?

That has to be FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED.
