AIX had started using the /etc/rc.d setup since 4.3.3.
I think AIX 5L may incorporate most of the UNIX/LINUX generic
features missing from its previous versions.

No, it doesn't. On Solaris you will find the familiar
/etc/rc.d setup. AIX does not use this, but rather
relies exclusively on inittab and a single klunky
shell script.
