Tom,

I have never used this parameter in the past, but I *believe* that this will
allow you to open up your database in read only mode when you have got
corruption in something like a system datafile or control files? Yyou can
then take exports of the database to reload. Or something like that..

The gurus may have more info..

of counsel and Oracle Support.
