Helmut,
One reason can be that the ORACLE_SID environment variable has not been
set.
Will the box be supporting more than one Oracle database?
If not, add the environment variable ORACLE_SID - Control Panel - System
- environment variables.
If you have multiple databases, then set the SID in your shell that is
currently open, or specify a tns alias.
