Dick,
I have to agree with your logic except for the starting on NT part.  If 
you want to do Oracle right you need to have someone with regedit skills 
and a good batch scripting background.  For that you should just as well 
start with Linux.  RedHat 7 installs pretty brainlessly, and like you 
mentioned it is remarkably reliable and robust.  Also scale up from Linux 
to RISC UNIX would be a lot easier than scale up from NT.
