All such mess in dbstart (and dbshut) is because Oracle prefers to keep
patching these scripts for current releases rather than writing them afresh
in a clean concise manner. Just look at these scripts in 8i and 9i. Code
still exists to check if there is 'sqldba' and all that. When delivered
scripts do not work, patches are issued to complicate them further.
Hope 10i will come out with newly written dbstart/dbshut scripts :)
