Veronica,

There are valid reasons for putting several tablespaces
in backup mode at once.  

If you are backing up several disks or tapes simultaneously,
and they are fairly fast, you can put several tablespaces
in backup mode at one time.

If you're backing up a file at a time though, there's not
much point in doing so.
