Mark,

Check "colors" in the display setting (right button over the wallpaper). Make sure it 
is 256 colors or higher. I remember a Java display bug that you may be hitting. 
Otherwise, create a run a simple java graphics program. If that fails too, then I 
think your display trick may be the cause.
