I noticed this same difference between versions 8.1.5 and 8.1.7. In 8.1.5, the substr() function (ie. select substr(column1,1,10) works just fine.....but in 8.1.7 it seems to be ignored. Defining the column seems to take care of it.

Subject: Diffs in SQL*Plus formatting between 8/8i

Hey all,
One other slightly puzzling, erm, puzzle. The default column format seems
to have changed between 8.0.6 and 8.1.7 in SQL*Plus, but I can't seem to
figure out what it is or find any mention of it in any Oracle doc. We
aren't using any "login.sql" files.
It doesn't really bug me because it forces an explicit "COLUMN" statement,
which I'm all in favor of for production SQL*Plus scripts, but I'm curious
as to what changed.
I purposely didn't include an example in the hopes that it's not just me...
Anyone?
TIA,
