I have finally found the solution to my problem.

Bug:  registry key starting with backslash can corrupt the registry

O/S affected:

        Microsoft Windows versions 2000, 2000 SP1 Professional
        Microsoft Windows versions 2000, 2000 SP1 Server
Microsoft Windows versions 2000, 2000 SP1 Advanced Server

Solution:  Apply SP2

See Microsoft Notes:  Q296733 - Creating a Registry Key That Starts with a Backslash Causes Corruption in Registry  for more details.

Since I'm trying to install Internet Developer Suite, I have to "down grade" the O/S to SP1.  To do this, I'll "update" using the original Windows 2000 CD, then apply SP1.

Boy, what a run around!

Boy, I'm stumped.  I've done this zillons of times on NT, but this is the first try on Win2k.....

I have a software key, HEKY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Oracle, that I am unable to delete.

Here are the rest of the entries...

HEKY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Oracle
..All_Homes
....ID1
......\Registry Backup
..Backup
....\Registry Backup

There are no other values.  The keys have no values.  The software directories do not exist.  There are no other entries in the registry relating to Oracle.

I have tried an upgrade reinstall of Win2k - no difference
I tried applying SP1 - no difference.

Any ideas on getting rid of this puppy?  Oracle tells me that they do not know what their software will do if I try to install with this key in the registry.

Thx - Don
