I love it when the "cattle guard" is just painted lines on the road.  When
they talk about free range cattle (at least in Wyoming), they mean it.  I
had to dodge around a bull once who was very interested in why I was
approaching his harem.  Actually, he wasn't interested in me so much as my

That's not unusual if you were on Forest Service land. Did you cross a
cattle guard some time before meeting the cows?

Actually, this reminds me of something.  Where I come from
I have never seen a cow not behind a fence but I was driving up
to Mt. Adams one day (well actually it was the trip back) and
I found myself stopping for cows in the road.  They don't bother
fencing them.  Strangest thing I had seen since moving out
here (besides the people).
