Depends on the hardware for Linux. Main problem w/ Intel M'boards is
that the I/O channels are narrow and slow. So, if you're looking to
move hefty amounts of data at once then Linux on a non-intel platform
might work rather nicely. If the data is mostly there and accessed
via "bursty" queries (i.e., sparse indexes, narrow tables) then an
intel might work just fine.
Suggest checking linux.org. They have a variety of "success stories"
that include information on specific setups.
